The artistic director and conductor at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre Teodor Currentzis and the theatre’s chamber choir musicAeterna have been announced as nominees in the international prize for classical music, the International Opera Awards 2014. The winners will be announced on the 7th April.
Maestro Currentzis has been nominated in the category «Best conductor». Fellow nominees include Mark Elder (Halle Orchestra, Manchester, UK), Andris Nelsons (Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston, USA), GianandreaNoseda (BBC Philharmonic, Musical Director of TeatroRegio, Turin, Italy), Kirill Petrenko (Musical Director of Bavarian State Opera, Munich, Germany) and Simone Young (Chief Conductor at the Hamburg State Opera, Hamburg, Germany).
Competition for the chorus musicAeterna in the nomination for «Best chorus» comes from the Bayreuth Festival Chorus, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, The Metropolitan Opera, the Welsh National Opera and the Wexford Festival Opera.
Award winners will be chosen by the judging panel:
- John Allison (editor of Opera magazine and classical music critic of The Sunday Telegraph),
- Hugh Canning (chief music critic of The Sunday Times),
- George Loomis (columnist for International Herald Tribune, The Financial Times and Opera Magazine),
- Sir Peter Jonas (former Artistic Director of Bavarian State Opera),
- Elaine Padmore (Director of Opera atCovent Gardenuntil 2011),
- Nicholas Payne (Director of Opera Europa).
The winners of the International Opera Awards 2014 will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on the 7th April.
The International Opera Awards were founded in 2012 by Harry Hyman, a British businessman and supporter of opera, and John Allison, Editor of Opera magazine and classical music critic of The Sunday Telegraph. The first awards took place in 2013. There are 19 award categories, including, amongst others: Opera Company, Chorus, Conductor, CD, DVD, Director, Designer, Festival, Male Singer, Female Singer, Young Singer, World Premier. Amongst the laureates from 2013 are the tenor Jonas Kauffman, the soprano Nina Stemme, the Salzburg Festival, Director Dmitri Tcherniakov, pianist and conductor Antonio Pappano.
