The international festival, which is named after the great impresario Sergei Diaghilev, is coming toPermfor the eighth time from 19 to 30 June 2014.
Three premiers will open the Diaghilev Festival – ballets by G. Balanchine to the music of I. Stravinsky – Apollon musagète, Rubies, Symphony in Three Movements. Thus, the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, which has for a long time productively cooperated with the G. Balanchine Fund, is adding another three works of this choreographer to its repertoire.
The following day, the audience can expect another premier for 2014 – the long-awaited opera Nosferatu by the composer Dmitri Kourliandski, libretto by Dimitris Yalamas. Director of the opera – Theodore Terzopoulos, conductor – Teodor Currentzis, artist – Jannis Kounellis, one of the founders of Italian Arte Povera (poor art).
Among the highlights of the coming festival – a performance of the fantasy Winterreise for tenor and orchestra by Hans Zender, written to the tune of Schubert’s Winter Journey. Performing this work is the musicAeterna orchestra, led by the conductor Teodor Currentzis, soloist – Boris Rudak. An important addition to the music will be the video art, the artist of which will be the director Alexei Romanov fromPerm.
Also presented to the festival audience will be a performance by the Teatro Real Madrid C (h)oeurs – a project by the Belgium choreographer Alain Platel, to the music of Verdi and Wagner with the ballet company C de la B. Performers – the musicAeterna orchestra, conductor – Teodor Currentzis. The performance will be dedicated to the memory of the legendary reformer of contemporary opera, Teatro Real Madrid intendant, Gerard Mortier.
Within the framework of the festival, the well-known Swiss violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, the wind ensemble from Germany German Brass, the French ensemble of baroque music Poème Harmonique, and the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble will give concerts. During the festival, an international symposium on ‘Diaghilev readings’ will take place.
Concerts of both rock and electronic music will be organically incorporated into the festival programme. Within the framework of the Diaghilev Festival, Chinawoman, the Canadian performer with Russian roots and the group Steppe-Scape will perform. An electronic music concert will take place, which will feature musical illustrations for Gregory Corso’s poem Bomb.
The performances which have become a tradition by Anton Batagov, Alexei Lubimov, Polina Osetinskaya, Olli Mustonen, and the Oistrakh Quartetwill also take place, as well as a performance by the festival choir, which this year will include musicians from the musicAeterna choir and the Irish National Chamber Choir. Closing the eighth Diaghilev Festival will be a concert by the festival orchestra, under the direction of maestro Currentzis, performing Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony.
