BIOGRAPHY
He studied stage design at Mozarteum in Salzburg and Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst Wien and started his career as a designer for theatre and was resident designer at Schauspiel Köln and Staatstheater Stuttgart.
His work was shown in Vienna (Burgtheater), Hamburg (Deutsches Schauspielhaus), Munich (Residenztheater), Berlin (Volksbühne, Schillertheater), and many other cities of the world, including collaborations with directors like Adolf Dresen, Jürgen Flimm and Anselm Weber. Recently, he has devoted himself mainly to opera. With Nicolas Brieger he staged Strauss’ Rosenkavalier at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and Kurt Weill’s two one-act operas The Protagonist and Royal Palace at the Bregenz Festival, and with Nikolaus Lehnhoff Parsifal (at the English National Opera and the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden), Der fliegende Holländer (at the San Francisco Opera) and Beethoven’s Fidelio and Strauss’ Elektra (at the Salzburg Festival). At the Zurich Opera he created the stage design for Un ballo in maschera and Tristan and Isolde.
Since 2010 he has been collaboration with Philipp Himmelmann: Korngold’s Die tote Stadt in Nancy and Nantes, Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg in Nancy, Donizetti’s L'elisir d'amore at the Oper im Steinbruch St Margarethen, Puccini’s Tosca at the Festspielhaus BadenBaden. In 2009 for his designs for Szymanowski’s King Roger (dir. David Pountney) staged in Bregenz, Barcelona and Warsaw he was awarded the Opus — Deutscher Bühnenpreis.
