Ballet in two acts (four scene)

Libretto by Leonid Lavrovsky and Vladimir Solovyov, based on George Sand’s story La Petite Fadette

Excerpts from Leonid Lavrovsky’s choreography and direction are used in the production

The ballet was first staged in 1934. This version was first performed in Perm in 2009.

The choreography is set to the music of Sylvia, a ballet by the innovative French composer Léo Delibes, while the plot comes from George Sand’s romantic story La Petite Fadette. The action takes place in the south of France at the peak of reactionary Catholicism. Fadette is forced to live in the forest with her mother and brother, as the villagers think the girl is a witch. Fadette’s staunchness enraptures the prosperous young peasant Andre, who decides to share his loved one’s reclusive life. In 2009, Fadette, based on Leonid Lavrovsky’s choreography (1934, Leningrad Maly Opera Theatre) was staged in Perm by Nikolai Boyarchikov, the theatre’s Principal Ballet Master from 1971 to1977, a period that theatre historians call the golden age of the Perm ballet.
