Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes

The ballet was written in 1912. This version was first performed in Perm in 2010. Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes including 1 interval

Daphnis et Chloé was written by Ravel for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Although the libretto was based on a tale by the Ancient Greek poet Longus, the Oriental motifs in the score prompted choreographer Alexey Miroshnichenko to draw analogies with the early twentieth century, when France was a colonial power and North Africa was part of its empire. Miroshnichenko decided to transpose the action of his production to Morocco in 1912. The romance of the French legionnaire Daphnis and the Russian ballerina Chloé develops in spite of many obstacles, including Daphnis’s cruel commanding officer, Chloé’s wealthy benefactor, and her jealous rival. The ballet’s neoclassical choreography is full of operatic, literary, and cinematic allusions.
