Libretto by Théophile Gautier and Jules Saint-Georges Choreography by Jules Perrot, Jean Coralli, and Marius Petipa, in a version by Tatiana Legat

The ballet was written in 1841. This version was first performed in Perm in 1959. It was revived in a new staging in 2008. Running time: 2 hours 15 minutes including 1 interval

The libretto is based on Heinrich Heine’s retelling of the legend of the spirits of dead brides: the Wilis. The Wilis hover over the cemetery by night, ready to lure any man they meet to his death. This fate also awaits Count Albrecht, who is responsible for the death of the peasant girl Giselle, whom he had deceived. But even after her death, Giselle is prepared to sacrifice herself for her loved one. In 1926, Giselle, in Marius Petipa’s canonical choreography, opened the first page in the history of Perm ballet. In 2008, the production was revived by former Mariinsky Theatre soloist Tatiana Legat.

The production is staged with the support of the Pearl of the Urals Foundation
