Ballet-féerie in a prologue and three acts
Libretto by Marius Petipa and Ivan Vsevolozhsky, based on the tale by Charles Perrault. Choreography by Marius Petipa
The ballet was created in 1889. This version was first performed in Perm in 2003. Running time: 3 hours 10 minutes including 2 intervals
The plot is adapted from the version of the eponymous French fairy tale by Charles Perrault. The story is that of a princess, who on her 16th birthday pricks her hand on a spindle and falls into a 100 year long sleep, which can only be broken by the kiss of a prince. Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty is set to music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and has been described by theatre critics as «an encyclopaedia of classical ballet». Its premiere in 1890 marked the beginning of the rise of Russian dance tradition. The Sleeping Beauty was first performed in Perm (then Molotov) in 1941 by the evacuated Mariinsky (Leningrad) Theatre. In 2003 the ballet was revised for the Perm stage by Gabriela Komleva, the prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre from the 1960s to 1980s.
The production is staged with the support of the Pearl of the Urals Foundation
