Biography
Actor, stage director and tutor. In 2009 Marat Gatsalov graduated from the Directing Faculty of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts — GITIS (Sergey Artsybashev and Yury Ioffe’s workshop).
In 2009–2012 he was a Deputy Head of the Dramaturgy and Directing Center (Moscow), where he also initiated and headed the creative laboratory «Workshop on the Begovaya» that more than 50 young directors took part in. From 2010 to 2012 Gatsalov was the Principal Stage Director of the Prokopyevsk Drama Theatre. In 2011–2013 he led the programme of contemporary dramaturgy «Living Spaces» at the «Territory» festival. In 2012–2014 Marat Gatsalov worked as the Artistic Director of the Russian Theatre in Estonia (Tallin). From 2013 to 2016 he was the Principal Stage Director of the New Stage of Alexandrinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
His production «The Coming of the Body» in the Dramaturgy and Directing Center was acclaimed as one of the most resonant theatre premieres of the 2010–2011 season.
In 2017 Gatsalov along with conductor Valery Gergiev staged the music drama «Salome» at the Mariinsky Theatre.
