Ballet in three acts

Libretto based on the scenario by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltser

Choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in Natalia Makarova’s version (including choreography by Frederick Ashton)

The ballet was written in 1876. This version was first performed in Perm in 2005

It is usually considered that the libretto of Swan Lake, telling the story of Princess Odette, who has been turned into a swan by the wicked magician von Rothbart, is based partly on Russian folklore and partly on a tale by Johann Karl August Musäus, the author of Volksmärchen der Deutschen, a collection of German fairy tales. Whatever the case may be, the plot of the ballet, which has become the emblem of the Russian school of ballet, bears obvious signs of German romanticism: the evil spell can be broken only by the love of the prince.

In Perm, Swan Lake is performed in the version created by Natalia Makarova, the prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre in the 1960s and, after her emigration in1970, a star in London and New York. In her version, the classic choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov (1895, Mariinsky Theatre) is supplemented by elements composed by Sir Frederick Ashton.

The production is staged with the support of the Pearl of the Urals Foundation
