Opera in two acts based on the story by Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Libretto by Georgy Isaakyan and Alexander Tchaikovsky, based on Solzhenitsyn’s story
The opera was written in 2008. This version was first performed in Perm in 2009.
This opera was specially commissioned from the composer Alexander Tchaikovsky by the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre for the ninetieth anniversary of Solzhenitsyn’s birth. The première, which took place in spring 2009 at The Diaghilev Seasons: Perm – Petersburg – Paris international festival, drew a wide response not only among musicians, but also in literary circles and among human rights activists. The libretto covers one day in the life of a Gulag prisoner, similar to thousands of other days: the minor details of camp life, reminiscences, carrying out daily tasks – all this saves Ivan Shukhov from idle vegetation. The action takes place in one of Stalin’s numerous camps, the metaphor for which was ‘the pick on which the Devil threshes the spikes of destinies and God puts every soul to the test’. Set designer Ernst Heidebrecht created a gloomy world, fenced off from the audience by barbed wire.
The production was nominated for the Golden Mask National Theatre Prize in seven categories. Conductor Valery Platonov, the project’s Musical Director, won a Golden Mask.
The first to perform the role of Ivan Shukhov was Pavel Bragin.
