Libretto by Tchaikovsky, based on Henrik Hertz’s drama King Rene’s Daughter
The opera was written in 1891. This version was first performed in Perm in 2007.
Iolanta, daughter of the King of Provence, has been blind since birth, but is unaware of her misfortune. However, a young knight with whom she falls in love reveals to her the dreadful truth. The girl’s shock at learning of her inability to see the world and at the fact that her incensed father is threatening to execute her lover proves to be the only way she can be healed of her mysterious blindness.
This is one of the few modern productions at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre that is staged in the traditional, sumptuous operatic style. The plot develops in the period intended by the opera’s composers: the age of medieval troubadours.
